College sets auditions for children in Christmas show

PASADENA, Texas — San Jacinto College Central’s theatre and film department will hold open public auditions for children to be cast in the annual holiday production “Santa’s Christmas Magic: The Musical.”

Auditions for children ages 5 to 15 will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18, and Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. on both dates. Auditions will be held in the Powell Arena Theatre on the Central campus, located at 8060 Spencer Hwy. in Pasadena. Materials need not be prepared in advance, and everyone auditioning should dress to move.

“Santa’s Christmas Magic: The Musical” is a fantasy about a sinister plot to steal Santa’s magic. The cast includes 30 adult actors, singers and dancers, and up to 40 children.

“Adult actors were cast several weeks ago, and have been working hard learning lines, songs and dances,” commented Dr. Jerry Ivins, artistic director for the musical. “Now the artistic team is hoping to cast local children who have one week of evenings open for rehearsals. We encourage all children who can sing, dance, tumble, act, or that just have an interest in theatre to come out. No experience is necessary.”

The children’s elf chorus will attend five rehearsals, and will appear in up to six scenes in the show. Rehearsals for the children will begin on Sunday, Nov. 28, and will continue until the show opens on Dec. 3. Most rehearsals will last for about two hours until a few days before the opening of the show. Interested children should be conflict-free for evenings during rehearsal.

Performances are set for Dec. 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m., and on Dec. 5 and 12 at 2:30 p.m. Special matinee performances will be performed for area schools and child care centers on Dec. 3 and 10. For more information about the rehearsals or the play, please call 281-542-2039, or e-mail jerry.ivins@sjcd.edu.
