College of the Mainland of Texas City showed its “pink pride” in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which ended recently.
The college’s Multicultural Team hosted speakers Dr. Marilyn Marx, a surgeon from Texas City, and Wanda Bass, COM employee and 10-year breast cancer survivor.
Dr. Marx and Bass spoke to more than 100 participants who gathered at the college on Amburn Road.
In addition to hosting the event, COM employees raised awareness by having “Pink Out Fridays” and registering for digital mammograms through Mainland Medical Center.
COM staff, students, and community members also supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month by purchasing raffle tickets for a Pink Basket Raffle. Proceeds totaled $550 and were given to Susan G. Koman for the Cure.
Organizers of these October events at College of the Mainland included Nina Rojas, a COM student from Santa Fe; Telishia Long, chair; Joann McNeill, Tillie Henson and Wendi McNeill, co-chairs, and committee members Marion Stevens and Ruben Garcia.
