LAS POSADAS AND BETHLEHEM ON THE BOARDWALK
CHRISTMAS TIME BEGINS IN PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS
Las Posadas, one of the main holiday events in Port Arthur, Texas, is a dream come true. “I envisioned the boardwalk transformed into the Little Town of Bethlehem and becoming the stage for Las Posadas”, says Maria Block, event coordinator.
The 9th presentation of Las Posadas and Bethlehem on the Boardwalk will take place this year on Saturday, December 4, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Las Posadas is the ancient celebration of the hardships Mary and Joseph encountered searching for lodging in Bethlehem. Experience the serenity of the holidays, as you follow a procession of Joseph, Mary, and angels through a path of 1000 luminarias (warm glowing candles) in sand filled bags which line the walk. This symbolically represents the “lighting of the way” as the celebration leads directly into the reenactment of the nativity, which we have dubbed “Bethlehem on the Boardwalk,” a theatrical performance with lights and staging.
It will be put on with the help of Our Lady of Guadalupe church, and numerous other cast members and volunteers. The reenactment begins as soon as the Las Posadas procession arrives at the boardwalk (downtown Port Arthur, on the seawall around 6:00 p.m.). A manger scene will be accompanied by a choir, to encourage you to feel the true spirit of the holiday season.
“This is truly a multi-cultural event that brings our community together”, says Maria Block. Both young and old are encouraged to participate in the Las Posadas. This is a time for all to come together in the spirit of the season.
