Richard (Dick) HeckardRichard (Dick) Heckard, 77, passed away Thursday, January 6 at his home in Galveston.

A memorial service will be held Monday, January 10 at 5:30pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Galveston.

Dick was born May 4, 1933 in Marysville, Kansas to Margaret and George Heckard.  Richard is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Susan as well as his parents, his sister Jacqueline and his brother Bruce.

He graduated from Princeton University, and married Susan Perry in October 1956.  At the time of their marriage, Dick was in the army, serving in the Judge Advocate General’s office.  The couple lived in Germany and then moved to California where he began working for American National Insurance Company.  Dick worked his way from insurance salesman to a management position, at which time the family moved to Galveston where they made their permanent home.   Dick was committed to service for others, and was an active member of the Galveston Noon Optimist Club and Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was an officer in the Optimist club and spent many hours on projects such as their Christmas tree lot and oratorical contests for youth.  At church, Dick was both an elder and a deacon, and he served on numerous committees.  He enjoyed traveling with his wife to conventions for both his work and for the Optimist club, as well as singing with the church choir, playing bridge, and going out to dinner and to plays with their friends.

Dick is survived by children Beth Roddin and husband Gerald, Nancy Bertolino and husband Dennis, and Donna Flint and husband Robert, along with grandchildren Christine Bertolino and Jennifer, Toby, and Quincy Flint. He also leaves behind his step-mother Mildred Heckard, brothers and step-brothers Robert Heckard and wife Lillian, Dennis Underwood and wife Carol, and Ned Underwood, along with many other friends and loved ones.
