STUDENTS TO BATTLE FOR CHANCE AT NATIONAL SPELLING BEE
League City – The 2011 Galveston/Chambers County Spelling Bee hosted 49 participants in a fierce competition on Saturday, February 5 at Sandra Mossman Elementary School. The Clear Creek Independent School District was represented by 34 elementary and intermediate schools. Dickinson ISD, Friendswood ISD as well as five private schools were also represented.
At Round 13, Syamantak Payra, a 5th grader from P. H. Greene Elementary in CCISD, took first place with the winning word onager. The remaining two contestants battled it out for an additional 9 more rounds before Stephanie Ngo, an 8th grader from Friendswood Jr. High in Friendswood ISD won with the winning word malaria. The Second Place winner is Rachelle Deal, a 5th Grader from Ferguson Elementary in CCISD. She will step in if one of first place winners is unable to attend the next Spelling Bee.
The two first place winners (Syamantak Payra and Stephanie Ngo) will move on to the Houston PBS Spelling Bee which will be held on March 26, 2011 at the Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting and will air live at 2:00 pm on Houston PBS, Channel 8. The Champion from this Bee will advance to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in June.
The students who participated in the Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday earned the right by winning their school level spelling bee.
