Hi. I’m Pat Patton. I have a very interesting guest today, author, radio show host, and public speaker Rick Gillis.
Listen: MP3 RealPlayer
Rick is a pioneer of 21st century job search, and has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the Houston Chronicle, BlackEnterprise.com, and DallasNews.com. Rick has been heard on NPR, countless radio stations across the United States, and has also been on the air in Australia and Canada. He was also the host of Rick Gillis Employment Radio on Houston-based KFNC-FM, 97.5.
Rick has appeared on television and hosted a 5-part television series for Houston Community College. The Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals awarded Rick the 2009 Ava Platinum Award for TV/On-Camera Talent for that effort.
Rick was instrumental in introducing the first local employment website in Houston in 1997. As a result of his marketing the job board, Rick became a job search expert, author and speaker who has spoken before thousands of people for more than ten years.
Rick is the author of two books. His most recent book on job search is called The Real Secret to Finding a Job? Make Me Money or Save Me Money! Rick regularly presents his job search techniques and tactics to networking and professional associations across the country.
I can see why Rick has speaking engagements throughout the United States. I heard Rick speak at a seminar in December, and I was blown away by his dynamic personality and his connection to the audience. Rick was such a dynamic speaker that I knew that I had to interview him.
Rick’s book, The Real Secret to Finding a Job? Make Me Money or Save Me Money. is excellent. It is very unique in its approach to resumes, very informative, and also entertaining. This book has the latest, greatest, and up to date information and is an excellent resource for anyone who is looking for a job right now.
During our discussion of the book, we talked about Rick’s innovative short-form/Pre-Resume concept. Rick said in his book, and he also stated it in this interview, that he is comfortable in saying that The Real Secret to Finding a Job? Make Me Money or Save Me Money! is the only and best job research book anyone will ever need.
You can buy The Real Secret to Finding a Job? Make Me Money or Save Me Money on Rick’s website, www.rickgillis.com.
A surprising thing about Rick after you see one of his dynamic performances is that when you talk with him he is very low key, and low ego. It comes across very strongly that he uses his visibility and knowledge to make a difference in people’s lives. Rick feels that helping people find jobs, and possibly create a new start in life, is his passion and his calling.
During Rick’s presentation at the seminar, he mentioned his love of music. When I called him to set up the interview, I wanted to find out more information about his music, and Rick casually mentioned that he has a small recording studio in his home, and he writes and produces all of his music, and can also play all the instruments. Talk about talent and creativity!
Rick mentioned during our interview that he had a recent TV interview with Emmy Award Winner Ernie Manouse, on Ernie’s TV show InnerVIEWS on Houston PBS, Channel 8. Rick said that the show will be aired sometime in February.
During our interview, Rick mentioned how excited he was about his most recent project—the creation and management of UCTCRadio.com. The parent company, UCTC Transition Center, is involved in career transition training and has asked Rick to run the marketing “mouthpiece” of the organization. The station will focus on politics, business, issues in the news, education and careers. I am very pleased that Guidry News Service is the first to break the news about UCTCRadio.com.
One of the goals of my interviews is to focus on accomplishing dreams and living lives of excellence. Rick’s strong belief that helping people find jobs is his passion and his calling, and his genuine interest in making a difference in people’s lives makes him the perfect choice for this interview.
