David Louis Piel, Jr. passed away Friday, February 18, 2011 at Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston.
He was born December 17, 1950 in Galveston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, David Louis Piel, and great uncle, Louis M. Drew. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeannie Piel; mother, Katherine Piel; son, Austyn Piel and wife, Jenny; daughters, Ashley Piel; Melinda Gipson and husband, Jason; and Allison Ward; brother, Michael A. Piel and wife, Sarah; sister, Kimberly Conner and husband, Steven; grandchildren: Dalton, Jocelyn, Alexander, Ethan, and Tristan Piel, Jace and Lane Gipson, and Brianna Ward; sisters-in-law: Charlyn Jensen and husband, Per; Sandy Burnette; and Betty Morgan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
With over 40 years in the construction industry, David was employed by Satterfield & Pontikes Construction where he served as a General Project Superintendent. He was a member of the Houston Home Builders Association. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge # 126 in Galveston, the Waller County Horse Council, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Team Penning and Sorting Committee, and the Valley Lodge Trail Riders. David was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Bellville, Texas.
Known as “Papa Dave” by his grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, David spent many hours leading horses carrying his beloved young family members. He was an accomplished horseman and outdoorsman and enjoyed horseback trail riding and cattle sorting. He had a great love for white tail deer and mule deer hunting, and was an avid bird hunter and skeet shooter. He will be missed by his companion Rocket.
Memorial services will be held at Moody Memorial Methodist Church in Galveston, at 11:00am, Wednesday February 23, 2011.
Honorary pallbearers will be Marr Lonabar, Scott Tinsley, Karl Greif, Frank Purjet, George Van Etan, Mike Miller, Ross Mills, Tommy Siedel, James Collins, Bobby Warren, and Frank Shukanes.
