With photos by Robert Mihovil and video by Mitchell Historic Properties
Saturday, February 26, 2011

The City of Galveston officially declared February 25 as “George Mitchell Day” preceding the first Mardi Gras Parade entitled “Salute to George Mitchell” in the Uptown Entertainment District. Galveston Councilmember Steve Greenberg acknowledged Mr. Mitchell for his long-time contributions to Galveston during a brief ceremony in front of The Tremont House.

George Mitchell and several prominent Galvestonians worked to revive Mardi Gras as a city-wide celebration to attract visitors during what was historically a slow time of year. This 1985 city-wide celebration was held in conjunction with the opening of Mitchell’s hotel - The Tremont House.

Robert Mihovil provided photos of Mr. Mitchell and his friends in front of the Tremont House.

In 2008 the Galveston Chamber of Commerce honored George Mitchell with its Spirit of Galveston Award.  This video was produced for that event to highlight Mr. Mitchell's contributions to Galveston's philanthropy, preservation, restoration and economic development.
