Public Safety News
Galveston Police Department
News Release
Monday, March 07, 2011

On 3/5/2011 at approximately 7:00pm, Dontral Sanders turned himself in to Officer Tommy Maffei of the Galveston Police Department. Sanders was brought to the police station by family members and taken into custody without incident. Sanders is charged with Injury to a Child in connection with the beating death of a two year old child, Traeshon Young.

On March 4, 2011, Detectives of the Galveston Police Department secured an arrest warrant for Dontrel Alexander Sanders for the offense of Injury to a Child-Serious Bodily Injury (1st degree felony). The death of Traeshon Sanders occurred on February 27th, 2011 in the 5400 block of Ave L in Galveston, Texas.

On February 27th, Sanders called 9-1-1 to report that his child was not responding. Officers and Galveston EMS responded to 5404 Ave L. Upon arrival, Officer Jamie Osteen-Alcocer found the child was not breathing and began CPR. EMS arrived on scene and continued treatment inside the ambulance. EMS personnel removed Traeshon’s shirt and observed evidence of severe abuse all over the child’s body. The officers on scene were made aware of the condition of the child’s body and detectives were called out to the scene.

Detective Michelle Sollenberger interviewed the mother of the child, Porsche Mitchell, and Dontral Sanders. Over the course of the week, the investigation produced probable cause to charge both Mitchell and Sanders with willful, serious bodily injury to the child. Both Sanders and Mitchell knew the extent of the injuries caused by their abuse of the child and both have been charged with this offense.

Due to the numerous injuries and the extent of those injuries, sustained as a result of the beatings inflicted by Mitchell and Sanders, the exact injury or combination of injuries which caused the death of Traeshon Young is still being determined.
