COM STUDENT ENJOYING DISNEY INTERNSHIP

COM student Brooke Sumrall, who is interning at Disney World’s EPCOT Center this semester, wears a period costume at the American Section of the World Showcase.College of the Mainland student, Brooke Sumrall, is currently interning at Disney World. Sumrall is working as an American Representative at the World Showcase at EPCOT.

Sumrall has only been at Disney for a few weeks but is enjoying all the interesting people she has met. “I love it, it is way better than expected. I love the people here and don’t want to leave,” said Sumrall.  She has had the opportunity to visit all of the Disney parks on her days off and plans to visit them multiple times before she leaves. Her internship is over in June but she may try to extend it an extra month.

“I am in attractions, so I deliver speeches to the guests about the attraction, which is a theater show about the history of America. I do a number of things with my job: I greet guests; I tour them around the pavilion; escort guests to the theater; run the theater show; and overall make sure the guests have a magical experience while at Disney World,” said Sumrall. She wears a Victorian dress and bonnet, befitting the time period of the attraction. When asked the best part of her job she exclaimed, “I love being able to interact with the kids and do pictures and autographs with the guests.”

“Disney is a great opportunity and I am learning a lot and meeting interesting people,” said Sumrall. She said more students should look into the program because “it looks really good on your résumé and is a great experience.” Students come from all over the United States, as well as the world, to intern with Disney. As such a large company, Disney offers experiences for almost any field of study, from marketing to biology.

Sumrall has been a student at COM for the past three years in the welding program. She is a 2009 Santa Fe High School graduate where she was active in the Santa Fe Future Farmers of America. Sumrall will attend Sam Houston State University in the fall where she will major in animal science with a minor in welding. She hopes to become an agricultural science high school teacher.
