League City – The Clear Creek ISD/ Johnson Space Center robotics team, The Robonauts, successfully competed in the Lone Star Regional FIRST Robotics Tournament which featured 53 robotic teams from around the United States and Mexico. The Robonauts walked away from the competition undefeated after playing in 17 matches, winning the tournament played in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center March 17 – 19, 2011.
The Robonauts were also awarded the Engineering Inspiration award for their robot “Magic.” “This award is given to teams for advancing respect and appreciation for engineering,” explained CCISD Robotics Coordinator Luis Medina. “Magic has an advanced control system as well as 14 different degrees of freedom that allowed it to dominate this year’s challenge.” The team was also awarded the Coopertition Award. Coopertition is founded on the concept and a philosophy that teams can and should help and cooperate with each other even as they compete. Coopertition means competing always, but assisting and enabling others when you can.
The Robonauts will be competing in the FIRST Robotics Championship in April where they will be competing against over 300 teams from around the world.
