San Jacinto College
Free Service Learning Professional Development Workshop
News Release
Saturday, March 26, 2011

HOUSTON —San Jacinto College South will be hosting a free service learning professional development workshop for local community college faculty on April 1.

Keynote speaker and nationally renowned service learning expert, Dr. Mary Prentice of New Mexico State University, will open the workshop. Other presentations include student panelists in college prep, early college high school, sociology, and cosmetology, along with faculty panels from the chemistry, reading, and cosmetology departments. Student and faculty panelists from Houston Community College’s psychology department will also present at this year’s event. Roundtable discussions with faculty and community partners will be held in order for attendees to gain hands-on knowledge about how to incorporate service learning into college curriculums.

“Service learning creates opportunities for faculty, students, and community partners to work toward common objectives,” said Deborah Smith, San Jacinto College South career and employment services coordinator. “Students receive credit for the learning that takes place outside of the classroom while they perform service relevant to their curriculum, which directly supports one of our core College values: ‘Sense of Community.’”

Representatives from Armand Bayou Nature Center, The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc., Dress for Success Houston, Memorial Hermann Southeast, and the Sickle Cell Association of Texas Gulf Coast will also be on hand to give insight into how they have participated in student service learning opportunities as well. Area community college faculty are encouraged to register for this event to get more information on ideas of implementing components of service learning as class projects and activities, as well as how to motivate and engage students to learn course concepts through community experiences.

The Service Learning Roundup will be held on Friday, Apr.1, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning in the Proscenium Theatre in the Marie Spence Flickinger Fine Arts Building on the South campus, located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston. Those interested are asked to register at www.sanjac.edu/service-learning-roundup. Confirmation emails including a map with directions will be sent to all registered participants. For more information on the Service Learning Roundup, please call 281-669-4782.
