Rebecca Simpson Lowrey, 95, of Galveston passed away April 2, 2011 at Meridian Health Care Center. She was born in Olney, Texas, on April 29, 1915, from the union of Charles Jefferson Simpson and Sarah Jane Hoge Simpson.
Mrs. Lowrey graduated from Greenville, Texas High School and attended Welsey College in Greenville before moving to Austin in 1933 to work for the State Superintendent of Education. She married Mark Lowrey August 23, 1947 at the home of Bill and Janet Coyle in Rowlett, TX. This union lasted 12 years before Mark passed away in May of 1958. She was a resident of College Station for 47 years, retiring as administrative secretary for the Thermo Dynamics Research Center at Texas A & M University. She was an active member of the Business and Professional Women’s Association.
Mrs. Lowrey moved to Galveston in July, 1999, making her home at the Moody House Retirement Center (now The Meridian). She enjoyed playing cards and games with her many friends. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. In October, 2010 due to health reasons she moved to Meridian Health Care Center where she learned to play Bingo and other board games. She was also an avid reader.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Janie Simpson, husband Mark Lowrey, sisters Dorothy Hawkins and Janet Coyle, brother George Simpson, and infant brother Charles Jefferson Simpson. She is survived by nieces Jane Williamson and husband Frank, Nancy Yarnes, Susan Kirby and husband Larry, Becky Buttram and husband Mike; nephews Jerry Hawkins and wife Ann, William Coyle and wife Missy. She is also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Graveside service will be held at Dodd City Cemetery, Bonham, TX at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 9, 2011. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Hawkins, Billy Coyle, Frank Williamson, Larry Kirby and Mike Buttram.
