Lifelong Galvestonian, former Galveston Fire Chief, and District 5 Councilman Danny Weber, Sr. passed away Saturday morning, April 23, 2011, following a brief illness. Danny was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing.
Danny was born at St. Mary’s Infirmary in Galveston, TX in 1948 to Leroy (Buddy) and Anastacia Scofelia Weber. He attended elementary school at St. Patrick’s and graduated from Kirwin High School in 1967. Danny then graduated from Galveston Junior College where he received Associate Degrees in Business and Fire Studies. In 1970, Danny wed the love of his life, Yvonne, shortly after joining the Galveston Fire Department to begin his fire career. Danny was also a longshoreman and a member of the ILA. Danny joined the Knights of Columbus in 1989 and rose to become a Past Faithful Navigator 4th Degree Knights of Columbus of the Msgr. Chataignon Assembly #9978. He was an instructor in Fire Technologies at Galveston College and ran two consecutive Fire Academies through the school. Danny achieved the rank of Galveston Fire Chief, where he remained until his retirement after 32 years of service.
After retirement, Danny sought, ran for, and won the City Council Representative position for District 5. He proudly represented District 5 for three consecutive terms totaling six years of service on City Council. Danny also served as a member of the Park Board of Trustees for six years and was on the Board of Directors for the Mardi Gras Children’s Parade. Danny had a passion for good family times and honest hard work. He enjoyed refurbishing furniture and restoring antiques, as well as barbecuing and music. Danny loved Galveston and always encouraged all to remember to “Shop Local and Hire Local.”
Danny was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Yvonne (Vonn) Weber; two loving children: Danny Weber, Jr. and wife, Susan; and Anastacia Rubio and husband, Jesse; grandchildren: Samantha and Megan Weber and Jesse and Rebecca Rubio; sister, Sister Rosalita Weber of Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in Houston; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Danny’s family will receive visitors after 5:00 pm, Tuesday, April 26th, at Sacred Heart Church. A rosary will be held at 7:15 pm, led by Deacon John Pistone.
Funeral Mass will be 1:30 pm, Wednesday, April 27th, at Sacred Heart Church with burial following at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be members of the Galveston Fire Department and members of the Knights of Columbus.
