COLLEGE STATION – John A. Garcia and Kathleen I. Garcia of San Antonio are Texas A&M University’s “2011 Aggie Parents of the Year.”
They were nominated for the honor by their three Aggie children: Samantha, Class of 2013, Kimberly, Class of 2010, and Cassandra, Class of 2008. Their father is a 1980 Texas A&M graduate.
When nominating their parents, the three Aggies said, “No matter how much time and energy they give to Texas A&M, they are always looking for ways to give even more.”
In their nomination letter, the three daughters said their parents already support the Corps of Cadets, The Association of Former Students, the Aggie Spirit Development Council and many other activities, yet they have their sights set on doing even more for the institution they believe in the most.
"The unyielding care and love they show Texas A&M by providing a hand in Fish Camp or the Aggie band prove that they believe they are a part of something bigger than themselves,” the three daughters said in their nomination letter. “Home is where the heart is and that is a concept they know and embody. Their home is with Texas A&M University. Their heart is with the students – the Aggie leaders of tomorrow. Home and heart are embodied by their overwhelming desire to make each and every Aggie student feel loved, empowered and a member of the family. This is the spirit of the Parents of the Year – they're not just parents to Cassandra, Kimberley and Samantha. They're parents, and always have been, to each and every Aggie."
The Garcias were on hand when their selection was announced during the All-University Awards program Sunday (April 17) at the closing of Parents’ Weekend activities on campus.
"Our committee was thrilled to present Mr. and Mrs. Garcia as the new Parents of the Year,” says Audrey Roeder, director of the Parents’ Weekend Committee. “It was clear through the nomination we received from their daughters that they not only had a clear passion for serving Texas A&M, but also a heart for reaching out to students, and that's exactly what we look for when selecting a couple."
Responsibility for selecting the Aggie “Parents of the Year” rests with a student committee that, after a lengthy process of soliciting and evaluating dozens of nomination forms, votes on the couple who best represents Aggie values and the “Aggie spirit.”
The All-University Awards ceremony that included naming the new “Aggie Parents of the Year” brought to a close Parents’ Weekend for 2011. The program included the presentation of awards to outstanding students for their exemplary service in the Corps of Cadets and other student organizations.
"Each year our committee works year-round to create a weekend that enables students to show gratitude to those who have impacted their lives, and also give those Individuals a glimpse into student life at Texas A&M," Roeder adds.
