COM Concert Band to Perform
News Release
Thursday, April 28, 2011

College of the Mainland’s Concert Band directed by Sparky Koerner will present a concert Monday, May 2 at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

“The group has been working very hard this semester preparing for this concert,” Koerner said. “I have tried to select music that is challenging for the students and enjoyable for the audience.”

Some of the selections will include Fortress Variations; throughout this piece, themes from the original hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” can be heard; the beautiful melody of “Somewhere” from West Side Story; Gustav Holst’s Suite from “The Planets” takes us to Mars, Venus and Jupiter; and Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry” will be recognized as “Oh Danny Boy.” Other selections will also be performed.

Koerner invites all past and present musicians to join the COM Concert Band. If you would like to be involved, contact Sparky at: skoerner@com.edu or 409-933-8347.
