HOUSTON – Congratulations to HCSO Communications Officers Keturah Nelms and Mehveesh Sheikh! They have been recognized by the Greater Harris County 911 Network and the Commission on State Emergency Communication for their outstanding achievements.

C.O. Keturah Nelms was named Telecommunicator of the Year for her handling of an emergency call from a woman trapped in her third-floor apartment during a fire in 2010. C.O. Nelms stayed with the woman on the phone for 15 minutes until rescue firefighters could reach her. Unfortunately the woman died in the fire before help arrived.

C.O. Mehveesh Sheikh was named a Silent Hero for her assistance on a crime scene with multiple homicides in east Harris County. Because C.O. Sheikh is fluent in Urdu, she was taken to the crime scene to serve as an interpreter. C.O. Sheikh was instrumental to investigators and witnesses on the scene.

The awards were presented on Wednesday, April 28 during the GHC 9-1-1 Board of Directors lunch and meeting.
