Galveston, TX- Today the Port of Galveston hosted “2010 Leadership Galveston” an annual program conducted by Galveston College. This course is designed to give interested citizens an overview of the various businesses and organizations that make up the community. The sixteen members of this year’s group were welcomed by Wharves Board Chairman, Roland Bassett, Port Director Steve Cernak, and Roger Quiroga, Director of Real Estate and External Affairs.
Leading off today’s presentation Mr. Bassett explained the makeup and duties of the Board of Trustees appointed by Galveston City Council. Cernak and Quiroga then took over to discuss the port’s facilities and operations. After the port representatives made their opening remarks, the group members asked a wide variety of questions about port operations and future plans.
“We really enjoyed talking with the Leadership Galveston group. It is important for the citizens of our community to get a better understanding of the Port and its contributions to the community” said Steve Cernak, Port Director. “The Port of Galveston is always pleased to be part of Leadership Galveston and we want to thank Joe Huff and Galveston College for offering this important program to the local community.”
The Port of Galveston is Texas’ gateway for cruise sailings and international trade. The Port serves as the primary point of embarkation for cruises to the western Caribbean and handles over 850,000 cruise passengers annually with an estimated 916,000 in 2011. Three cruise lines sail from Texas’ only cruise port including Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean. The Port is a self supporting enterprise fund with operating revenues of approximately $21 million. It does not rely on tax dollars for operations.
