2010 Laura Smither Scholarship Awarded to Cody Westphal

The Laura Recovery Center - for missing children - proudly announces that Friendswood High School graduate Mr. Cody Westphal is the 2011 recipient of the Laura Smither Scholarship.

This annual $3,000 scholarship honors the memory of Laura Kate Smither, who was abducted and murdered in April 1997. Bob and Gay Smither are so proud of all past scholarship recipients and the many accomplishments they have made in their lives. The Smithers have no doubt that Cody will represent the scholarship and the memory of Laura well, and that Cody will go on to enjoy an illustrious career, whatever path he finds himself upon.

This young man will undoubtedly leave his individual mark upon the world and we will all enjoy seeing him do so. Cody grew up in Friendswood and has 2 siblings. He has participated in many sports and is a 4 year Letterman, but his heart is with tennis which he began playing in the 7th grade. He has enjoyed playing tennis with his father, in high school competition, and it will be a sport that he will enjoy for the rest of his life. Cody is most notably known as the “voice” of Friendswood High. He has been the announcer at many sporting and extra curricular events, most recently as the Captain of the Cruise Ship at the FHS Spring Show.

English has been Cody's favorite subject at school. Reading has been a passion since he discovered John Steinbeck and “Grapes of Wrath” in his 4th Grade year. Cody is currently the president of the Friendswood High School chapter of the National Honor Society. He was accepted into the prestigious Business Honors Program at McCombs School of Business at UT Austin, but has chosen to go to Texas Christian University, which he feels is a better fit for his values and diverse interests. He will pursue a business undergraduate degree. Cody plans to follow this with law school and possibly a political career in the distant future.

The Laura Recovery Center and the Laura Smither Scholarship Committee wish Cody every success in his college years and beyond. God Speed Cody!
