Houston Pilots Association donates $5,000 to establish scholarship for maritime students

PASADENA, Texas – The Houston Pilots Association recently donated $5,000 toward scholarships for students enrolled in the San Jacinto College (SJC) maritime program.

The association has been a strong and loyal supporter of the San Jacinto College maritime program. Capt. Tom Lightsey and Capt. Bob Webbon presented the College with the donation on behalf of the Houston Pilots Association during a recent board meeting.

"Their continued support, by serving first on the Maritime Leadership Forum and now on the advisory committee, has set SJC off in the right direction in order to better serve our community," said Capt. Mitch Schacter, SJC maritime director. "This scholarship donation sets the precedent for more to come from other members within the maritime industry. "

The College's maritime program prepares students for work in technical port and business operations within the maritime industry including port and shipping logistics, warehousing / storage / transportation (both land and sea), distribution, import and export operations, port and terminal operations, cargo handling, security, and maritime management. Scholarship recipients may be involved in any part of the maritime program, but must take at least one college-level course for the semester in which they receive funding.

“As community investment builds, we will build a greater future for our area by meeting the increasing demands of this industry,” said Ruth Keenan, interim executive director for the San Jacinto College Foundation. “Donations such as these help our College achieve its ultimate goal - student success.”
