News Release
Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Updated: Austin Middle School and AIM College and Career Prep lift lockdown procedures

GALVESTON, Texas – Administration at Austin Middle School and AIM College and Career Prep school as well as Galveston Independent School District Police initiated lockdown procedures at the campuses this morning. The emergency policy went in place at approximately 8:45 a.m. at Austin, then shortly thereafter at AIM College and Career Prep due to their vicinity of a reported shooting in the neighborhood near the schools. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 9:50 a.m. at both schools.

The lockdown was a precautionary move by GISD Police to keep students safely on campus. Working cooperatively with the Galveston Police Department, GISD Chief of Police LeeRoy Amador sent several GISD police officers en-route to Austin Middle School for a school lockdown, then to AIM College and Career Prep, because of the immediate threat the incident could pose to the safety of the students, parents, and staff at the school.

Chief Amador met with Austin Principal Cathy Van Ness and AIM College and Career Prep Principal Jean Fullen Principal to guide staff through the lockdown. All GISD police officers secured the exterior perimeter of the school property and made sure the students were safe. The lockdown was lifted after GISD Police and the Galveston Police Department determined it was acceptable to lift the lockdown measures.

Students will be sent home a letter from the office of Principal Van Ness and Principal Fullen explaining the procedure to parents in conjunction with the office of Superintendent Larry Nichols.
