HISD Board of Education Approves Draft Redistricting Plan
Trustee District Boundaries Redrawn to Reflect Population Changes
The Houston Independent School District Board of Education on Thursday approved a draft plan for redrawing the boundaries that are used to elect school board members. A series of public hearings on the preliminary redistricting plan will now be held.
HISD, like all other governmental bodies governed by officials elected from geographic single-member districts, is required to adjust those districts’ boundary lines after every U.S. Census, if there was a significant population shift in the past decade. The draft plan approved Thursday is a starting point for receiving public input on the proposal.
Public hearings on the preliminary redistricting plan for HISD’s nine trustee districts will be held at the following locations and times:
Thursday, May 26
Grimes Elementary School
Wednesday, June 1
Barbara Jordan High School for Careers
5800 Eastex Freeway
Tuesday, June 7
Chavez High School
8501 Howard Drive
Thursday, June 9
HISD Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center
4400 W. 18th Street
Census data and maps of the current and proposed district boundaries will be available at the hearings. The information is also available by contacting HISD Board Services at (713) 556-6010; 4400 West 18th Street; and online by clicking here. The Board of Education is expected to adopt the final redistricting map in June. It will then be subject to the approval of the U.S. Department of Justice.
