Bayshore Medical Center volunteers mark $129,000 in scholarships for San Jac students

PASADENA, Texas – Over the years, a small group of Bayshore Medical Center volunteers have worked tirelessly to raise $129,000 in scholarship funds for San Jacinto College (SJC) students.

This year is no different, as the group prepares to award $40,000 in scholarships for students enrolled in health science programs for the Fall and Spring semesters.

"A lot of students are not aware of the scholarships we have available," said John Logan, volunteer and scholarship committee chairman at Bayshore Medical Center. "We're a community hospital, and San Jacinto College is our community college. We plant the seeds and watch them grow. Many of them walk through that door and come back to work for us."

The volunteer group decided to establish a scholarship fund based off proceeds from the hospital's gift shop in the early 1990s, after noticing an increased demand for the hottest item of that decade, Ty Beanie Babies. With help from additional community donors, the fund has thrived to help SJC students in such programs as nursing, radiology, physical therapy, surgical technology, and emergency medical technician.

"We are so grateful for the dedicated efforts of our friends at Bayshore Medical Center,” said Ruth Keenan, interim executive director for the San Jacinto College Foundation. “Their efforts impact our students in more ways than one. Scholarships empower students to achieve their dreams of an education. San Jacinto College receives dedicated students; families’ lives are enriched through increased income; and finally, our community is enriched with a talented work force of future leaders. Giving back gives back. Thank you volunteers, and thank you Bayshore community."

Logan said 13 scholarships are available for the Fall 2011 semester. Those interested may visit the Bayshore Medical Center information desk for an application. The deadline is July 1. Once selected, students will receive $1,000 per Fall and Spring semester, equaling $2,000 total for the academic year.

"Even if a student only has one semester left, I encourage him or her to apply," said Logan. "We're here to help. Volunteerism isn't about getting paid; it's about the satisfaction we receive by furthering someone else's goals."
