Special Memorial Day Service for Fallen Service Members

Mayor Annise Parker encourages Houstonians to remember service members who have sacrificed for our freedoms and to attend a special Memorial Day Service at 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 30, 2011 at the Houston Veterans Administration (VA) National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston 77038.

There will be many symbolic highlights, including a flyover by the United States Coast Guard, a performance of taps, a cannon salute, a riderless horse procession by the Houston Police Mounted Patrol, Amazing Grace performed on bagpipes and a rifle salute.  The event will feature a parade of colors and wreaths by numerous local veterans' organizations, Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) units and local Boy and Girl Scout troops.

Park FREE at the North Shepherd Park & Ride, 7821 North Shepherd at Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston 77088, for a convenient connection to the 108 Veterans Memorial METRO bus.  The route will run from 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. (fares apply) on a 20 minute frequency.  Additional transportation will be provided at the gate of the cemetery to the event for elderly and disabled.

The City of Houston, working with METRO has developed this special METRO service to reduce travel and parking issues, especially since parking is reduced due to ongoing construction at the VA National Cemetery.  See http://www.cem.va.gov/CEM/cems/nchp/houston.asp for construction details.

For more information about the Memorial Day Service, contact Buddy.Grantham@houstontx.gov  or call METRO for routing questions at 713.635.4000.  For a map to the cemetery, see http://www.houstontx.gov/citizensnet/memorialday2011.jpg
