Cornyn To Salute Those Who Serve On Memorial Day
Will Participate in Naturalization Ceremony for Service Members and Annual Send-Off Ceremony For Military Academy Students
WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, will commemorate Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, with events in San Antonio and the Austin area. First, Sen. Cornyn will participate in a naturalization ceremony in front of the Alamo for six active duty service members as well as the spouse of a service member who is scheduled to soon deploy to Afghanistan. U.S. Magistrate Judge John W. Primomo will deliver the oath of citizenship, a military soloist will sing the National Anthem, and Sen. Cornyn will deliver remarks. Sen. Cornyn was the author of a federal law that expedited the citizenship process for active duty military.
Following the naturalization ceremony, Sen. Cornyn will travel to Kyle to host his 6th annual send-off ceremony for Texas students who will be attending one of our nation’s military service academies this summer. Sen. Cornyn will be joined by special guests, retired Major General Alfred Valenzuela, who will deliver the keynote address, and Major General John F. Nichols, Adjutant General for the State of Texas, who will lead the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. Major General Valenzuela served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army, commanding forces during the Cold War era, as well as the Gulf War. Prior to his retirement in 2004, General Valenzuela was the highest-ranking active duty Hispanic officer. Sen. Cornyn, General Valenzuela, and General Nichols will host a media availability immediately before the ceremony begins.
More than 100 students are expected to attend, along with their families, as well as several local elected officials, community leaders, and representatives from local veterans organizations. Iraq War veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and San Marcos resident Victor De La Cruz will provide the musical entertainment.
