Elementary and Primary Education
HISD Honors District Volunteers
News Release
Friday, May 27, 2011

More than 86,000 parents, businesses, and community partners support HISD students and teachers by volunteering their time each year. To salute these everyday heroes, HISD held its annual Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) breakfast and awards ceremony on May 23 at the Kingdom Builders Center (6011 West Orem, 77085). HISD Superintendent Terry Grier and HISD Board President Paula Harris presented more than 20 awards during the ceremony, which is sponsored by the HISD Foundation.

The highest recognition, the Jean Davis Myers Award, is presented to an individual or group whose program or volunteer efforts have had a positive effect on students. The award is named after Jean Davis Myers, who retired in 1990 with 33 years of service to HISD. For 20 of those years, she was executive director of the Volunteers in Public Schools program.

The 2010–2011 Jean Davis Meyers Award was presented to the Boy Scouts of America, for its service to Volunteers in Public Schools. The organization’s district- wide volunteer service leadership positively impacts student achievement and parental involvement.
