USACE Galveston awards contract for road repairs at Addicks, Barker dams
HOUSTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract to Bailey CKY JV in the amount of $957,682 for road repair work, limited slope repair work and vehicle control post installation at the Addicks and Barker dams and reservoirs in Harris County, Texas.
Constructed in the 1940s, the Addicks and Barker dams and reservoirs are flood damage reduction projects designed to prevent downstream flooding of Buffalo Bayou in the City of Houston. A portion of the contract will include the replacement of approximately three miles of gravel road on top of Addicks Dam and approximately five miles of gravel road on top of Barker Dam in the vicinity of the water control structures.
“This work will provide for the continued sound maintenance of Addicks and Barker dams, providing all-weather access along the top of the embankments to facilitate inspection of the embankments and uninterrupted access to the water control structures,” said Richard Long, supervisory natural resources manager for the Houston Project Office.
According to Long, the roadways at the dams become damaged through excessive use, resulting in potholes that hold water.
“This results in the excelled deterioration of the roadway and allows standing water to soak into the core of the dams,” said Long.
The contract will also allow for the repair of additional areas of roadways, limited slope repairs and the installation of vehicle control posts in select areas to control unauthorized vehicle activities at Addicks Dam.
“The slope repairs and vehicle control post installation will aid in the sound maintenance and protection of the embankment slopes necessary for the overall integrity of the projects,” said Long.
Work is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
