SPACE CENTER INTERMEDIATE BAND WINS NATIONAL AWARD
League City -- The John Philip Sousa Foundation, a non-profit organization, recently awarded three intermediate school bands the coveted Sudler Silver Cup Award, including CCISD’s Space Center Intermediate Band led by Director Donald McCandless.
The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation and sponsored by Louis and Virginia Sudler and recognizes truly great middle school bands of outstanding musical excellence.
The award was initiated in 1985 and, since that time, less than fifty bands have been designated as outstanding middle school and junior high school bands. This recognition is of particular merit. The recipients are selected from applications throughout the United States and Canada by a jury of previous cup recipients who meet at the international Mid-West Band Convention in Chicago each year.
Three Texas bands were selected for this outstanding award this year : Artie Henry Middle School in Cedar Park, Texas, Forbes Middle School in Georgetown, Texas and Space Center Intermediate School in Houston, Texas.
To be eligible for this award, a band must have a fine program over a period of 7 years with the same conductor in place for 7 years. According to the John Philip Sousa Foundation, because of the great music education programs, and the support from their parents and communities, the schools in Texas have always competed very successfully with other middle school programs throughout the United States and Canada.
Other states who have won this coveted award for their middle school programs have been Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Florida, Hawaii, South Carolina and Kansas.
