The Galveston College Board of Regents on Wednesday voted unanimously to accept the mid-year allocation of the Carl D. Perkins Basic Grant for 2011, which included an increase of $11,134 in funding.
The grant's total allocation is $111,183, including the increase, and provides assistance to students in vocational programs, including childcare.
The college board voted unanimously to approve a calendar of meetings for the 2011 budget and tax rate process. The board will hold its first budget workshop on July 28, and a second is scheduled for August 3. The board will then hold its regular meeting on August 10 and hold a public hearing regarding the budget. A meeting to propose the college's tax rate will be held on August 22, with public hearings for the tax rate scheduled for September 7 and September 14. The tax rate will be considered for adoption on September 27.
The college board canceled its regular meeting for July. The board had considered rescheduling the meeting due to the original July date conflicting with a conference.
The college board took no action regarding a lease agreement with McCoy Corporation. The item was held for further discussion.
The college board voted unanimously to grant a residential homestead tax exemption for the 2011 tax year. Exemptions will continue at the same amounts as previously approved by the college, with all homestead property owners receiving an exemption of $5,000, or 20 percent of the total value, whichever is greater, from the value of their property as assessed for taxes. Homeowners over the age of 65 receive an additional $10,000 exemption from the value of their property.
The college board voted unanimously to renew its insurance policy with the National Flood Insurance Program and Texas Windstorm Insurance Association.
The school board voted unanimously to approve changes in rank for two faculty members.
Dr. Larry Blomstedt was promoted from an instructor in history to an assistant professor of history. Dr. Ana Sanchez was promoted from an instructor in chemistry to an associate professor of chemistry.
