Early Childhood Development Center announces Superkids 2011
The Lamar University Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) has scheduled a perennial favorite, the Lamar Superkids 2011 program. The summer program will begin the week of June 20 with classes held Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. and a 1:30 p.m. dismissal time each Friday. The program consists of four week-long sessions through the week of July 18-22 with no classes scheduled for the week of July 4. This marks the 20th year the program has been held on the Lamar campus.
“An important goal of Lamar Superkids 2011 will be the focus on students’ relationships,” said Margaret Swope, ECDC director. “Healthy friendships are important building blocks for future success; therefore a portion of each day will be devoted to these relationships.”
Parents and students may select from a variety of courses offered throughout the program. Speakers have been invited to present talks and special activities on subjects such as “Going on Safari” in which students will discover untamed animals in the wilds of Africa; “Blooming Botany”, a presentation that will teach students about water-stealing plants as well as plants used for medicines, foods and art supplies; and “BugPlay”, an exploration of the world of insects as the students collect, observe and even taste creatures from the world’s largest animal kingdom.
The enrollment fee for students going into grades 1-3 is $200. Parents interested in making reservations or in need of further information are encouraged to contact Margaret Swope at the Lamar University ECDC at 880-8066 or 880-8098. The Early Childhood Development Center is located at 950 Jim Gilligan Way on the LU campus.
