Following a brief illness and courageous battle, Azale Holmes- McHenry, 66, made her transition from this earthly life to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 9th, 2011.
Azale was born in Galveston, Texas on February 17th, 1945, to the late Early Holmes, Sr., and Ethel Savoy. She was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1964, and was a member of the Herons of Jericho Forever Faithful Court #66. Following her graduation, Azale gained employment in nursing services at UTMB Hospital, where she remained for 35 years until her retirement.
Azale accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. She loved the Lord and was a FAITHFUL servant. Her service to God was unswerving. She assisted in teaching students at Ball High in a weekly after-school Bible club named “New Life.” She worked with her church family, preparing and delivering sack lunches to UTMB for patients and their family members. Azale labored in the vineyard until her health failed. Yet her faith, prayers and trust in God continued to the end.
Azale was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents Early and Georgia Holmes, her children, Gwendolyn Holmes and Harold Jones, Jr., two sisters, Shirley Lundy and Rose Holloway and brother Early Holmes.
Azale is survived by her devoted husband of 35 years, Elroy McHenry, ever faithful daughter, Lisa Jones, step-daughter, Michelle McHenry, step-sons, Elroy McHenry, II (Beverly) and Keith McHenry, step-grandchildren, Stacey and Tracey McHenry, Zachary Edrington, Chelsea Green (Patrick), Tiffany McHenry; sisters ,Geraldine Dotson, Emma Malone, Barbara Jean Hardy; brothers, Lionel Holmes (Evelyn) and Michael Holmes (Sedonia); sisters and brothers- in-law, Eileen Holmes, Terrance Holloway, Frank and Pat Hosey and Orbit and Norvella Hosey; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friend, as well as devoted friends, Martha Bogan , Gloria Dent and Irma Jean Fontonette.
Visitation will begin at 5PM on Friday, June 17th, followed by a wake from 7-8PM at Fields-Johnson Family Mortuary. A service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Rev. A.S. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
