Assistance League ® of the Bay Area
Assistance League® of the Bay Area and University of Houston-Clear Lake, in partnership for over 20 years, provide summer enrichment classes for local students. On Tuesday, June 7, Maria Montemayor, Kids' U Scholarship Program Chairman, and Mary Gibson, Vice President of Philanthropic Programs for Assistance League of the Bay Area, presented a check in the amount of $8180.00 to Dr. Spuck, UHCL Dean of Education, and Dr. Anne Coppenhaver, the Director of the Center for Education Programs.
This donation will provide 60 elementary school students from Clear Creek, La Porte, Friendswood and Dickinson school districts with scholarships to University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Kids’ U summer educational program. Kids’ U offers week-long courses ranging from robotics to poetry, and the scholarships awarded offer at-risk students an exciting learning environment to keep them learning throughout the summer months.
The chapter also provides classroom assistance from Assistance League members and Assisteens®. In 2010, over 40 members volunteered during the Kids’ U summer session, and Assistance League awarded 49 scholarships.
