HOUSTON - The Coast Guard rescued a father and son after their boat capsized in Galveston Bay, Sunday.

At approximately 10 a.m., an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter and crew from Coast Guard Air Station Houston was on a routine patrol when the crew spotted an overturned 18-foot pleasure craft more than 1-mile north of Eagle Point in Galveston Bay.  The Dolphin crew conducted a search of the area and located a cooler and gas tank floating in the vicinity of the overturned boat.  Following the small debris field, the Dolphin crew spotted one person in the water.  Robert Rasmussen, age 34, from Houston, was safely hoisted into the cabin of the Dolphin helicopter.  He notified the Coast Guard that his father was still in the water.

The Dolphin crew continued its search and located a good Samaritan who had arrived on scene and picked up the father, Richard Rasmussen, age 59, from San Leon.  The Dolphin crew then hoisted the father into the helicopter, and transported both father and son to Air Station Houston, where EMS crews were waiting to evaluate the men.

"We were in the right place at the right time," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Brett Bates, an Air Station Houston rescue swimmer. "When we hoisted the father and son, they both had their life jackets on.  They notified us they had been in the water for over two hours.  Having those life jackets on saved their lives," he said.
