Lanier Debate Team Wins 9th Straight National Tournament
This weekend in Dallas, the Speech and Debate Team from HISD’s Lanier Middle School won its ninth consecutive national debate championship. The Lanier team faced debate teams from all over the country and was recognized as the Overall School of Excellence and the Debate School of Excellence in the 2011 National Forensics League Tournament.
Individual Lanier students placed first in three important competitions. Connor Burwell won first place in Impromptu Speaking. Dylan Berens placed first in Extemporaneous Speaking and Chris Galliano and Gavin Martin won first place in Public Forum Debate. All four students were eighth graders this school year.
This was debate team coach Franz Hill’s fourth year leading the Lanier team. Hill coached the debate team at Jane Long Middle School for four years before coming to Lanier.
“This team battled extremely tough competition and persevered through a grueling schedule,” said debate coach Franz Hill. “We couldn’t have achieved this without the parental and administrative support and the guidance of the alumni assistant coaches.”
