Mrs. Florence Henderson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. B.M. (Viola Scull) Fedford, passed on June 13, 2011.
She graduated from Central High School in 1939 and from Prairie View A&M College in 1943 at the age of 19.
Mrs. Henderson taught math in Galveston for 30 years at B.T. Washington Elementary, Goliad and Sam Houston Jr. High Schools and Central Middle and Eighth Grade School.
She was a lifelong member of Reedy Chapel AME Church where she accepted Christ and served as a choir member, musician, Sunday School teacher, and Vacation Bible School teacher.
Mrs. Henderson was a member of the NAACP, ACE Volunteers, the Galveston Musical Club, the Retired Teachers, Mt. Olive’s Golden Stewards, Church Women United, San Jacinto Neighborhood Assoc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and the Galveston Heritage Chorale.
Mrs. Henderson was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Mr. Theasel Henderson. She is survived by her children, Theodore (Dolores) Henderson, Diane (Rev. Thomas) Moore, and Janice (Dr. Thomas) Albright; grandchildren, Florence (Luther) Taylor, Teresa (Joel) Simon, Holly Albright, Robert Albright, and Jonathan (Crystal) Albright; great-grandchildren, Aaron, Kamui, and Desiree; sister, Mrs. Izola Collins; in-laws, Mr. James Henderson and Mrs. Louella Henderson; and a host of dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She will lie in state at Wynn Funeral Home starting at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 22. and the wake will be from 7:00-8:00 p.m. that evening at the funeral home. The closed-casket service celebrating her life will be Thursday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Reedy Chapel Church, 2015 Broadway. Burial will follow in Oleander Cemetery on Broadway.
