Sadie Louise Townsend Rumph, 87, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2011. Sadie, a proud BOI, was born in Galveston, Texas on October 24, 1923. She graduated from Ball High School Class of 1941. She met the love of her life, Duane, at a USO dance; they married on January 11, 1943. Sadie was an Air Force wife, living in California, Florida, Louisiana, Ankara, Turkey, and Pasadena, Texas. Duane died of polio in 1952. At that time, Sadie and her children moved back to Galveston where she raised her children and lived the remainder of her life. She was active in her children’s activities, especially Girl Scouts, PTA, and Band Boosters.
Sadie worked at American National Insurance Company for 29 years, retiring in 1985. Sadie did not take to retirement so she began working as a kindergarten aide at both Morgan and Scott Elementary where she made many lifelong friends. She was known as “Granny” by the children and staff. She retired from GISD at the age of 78.
Sadie was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for 84 years. She served as Sunday school teacher, choir member, deacon, and elder. The members of Westminster were truly her family, supporting her throughout her life and especially in her final years. In addition to her church family, she leaves behind her special friends at her condominium where she lived happily for the past 33 years.
Sadie was preceded in death by her husband, S/Sgt. Duane W. Rumph; parents, Edmund and Sadie Townsend; and her brother, Charles Townsend.
She is survived by her four children: Don and Theresa Rumph, of Greenville, NC; Diane and Mike Browning, of Houston; Kathleen and Andy Allen, of Austin; and Loraine Smith of San Antonio. She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren and their spouses: Rachel and Kim, Rebecca, Sara, Lance and Loren, Travis and Lyra, Megan and Martin, Gabrielle and Luke, and Garth; and four beautiful great granddaughters: Veronica, Dana, Sarah, and Elizabeth. She is also survived by her brothers, TJ and Herbie Townsend and many other family members including Duane’s Montana family.
