John Payton to be honored by Dunbar Alumni Association
BEAUMONT, Texas – Longtime Lamar University icon John Payton will be honored by the Dunbar Alumni Association of Livingston, Texas, for his athletic and educational contributions to the school.
Payton, who has been at Lamar for more than 40 years, was named a special assistant to the athletic director in January. Payton spent 13 years as an assistant football coach at Lamar and was an assistant professor in the department of health and kinesiology.
Payton was an all-district athlete in football and basketball at Livingston Dunbar High School. Payton was a college football standout at Prairie View A&M, scoring 40 rushing touchdowns for the Panthers and setting the school record with 3,703 career rushing yards. After graduation, he became a successful high-school basketball coach, winning state championships at Woodville Scott High School in 1957 and 1958 and at Beaumont Charlton-Pollard in 1964.
