StarTex Power gives back to community with scholarship donation

PASADENA, Texas – StarTex Power, a Constellation company, has donated a $1,000 scholarship to the San Jacinto College (SJC) Foundation as part of its “Return the Favor” campaign. Current SJC student Rachel Slovacek, of Houston, is the lucky StarTex Power Scholarship recipient.

“I was so excited and glad when I got the news,” commented Slovacek. “Due to the economy, my family is going through some financial difficulties, and I did not see how there would be enough money to continue my education, so receiving this scholarship came at just the right time.”

In April, San Jacinto College students received an email with a link to fill out a form for a chance to win a $1,000 StarTex Power scholarship. Students then had the opportunity to share the link with “friends” through social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The more they shared the link, the more opportunities they had to win the scholarship.

Slovacek says she entered the contest several times. “I honestly did not think I had a chance to win, but I’m glad I entered, and I’m glad the College had the contest,” added Slovacek, who is studying Philosophy at SJC and then plans to transfer to the University of Houston-Clear Lake for a business degree.

“We are very excited to have a new partner in StarTex Power,” said Brenda Hellyer, chancellor of SJC. “Their generous donation will help Rachel pursue her educational dreams, and further advances the mission of the College which is to ensure student success, create seamless transitions, and enrich the quality of life in the communities we serve.”

Nearly 17 percent of the San Jacinto College students who received the email responded by clicking on a personalized link from the email. Compared to the national average of 5.9 percent (according to Epsilon’s first quarter 2011 North America email trends and benchmark report), the San Jacinto College and StarTex Power scholarship campaign proved to be a success.

“We are so proud to be able to present this scholarship for Rachel and look forward to her success at San Jacinto College,” said Marcie Zlotnik, Co-founder of StarTex Power. “Giving back to the community has always been a passion for StarTex Power and it’s great to enrich the education of a student right here in Houston.”
