ACC Invites Community to Welding Program Open House
The Alvin Community College Continuing Education and Workforce Development Welding Program will host an open house on August 31 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the ACC welding shop in building D.
Industry leaders including Miller Manufacturing and Thermodynamics Manufacturing will provide welding demonstrations and Ocean Corporation, an underwater welding company will share information about this specialized area of the trade.
“Welding has enjoyed continued job growth over the past few years and we employment opportunities are still out there for well-trained welders,” said Laura Bell, the Welding Program coordinator. “People who are interested in starting a career in welding are welcome to stop by the open house to learn more about the profession.”
To help raise money for the Welding Program scholarship fund, iron work decorations and refreshments will be sold during the open house. In addition, Tri-County, a welding supply company, will be donating a portion of the sales of supplies that evening.
ACC welding courses combine classroom studies with extensive hands-on training in the welding lab. Welding program graduates have found jobs in a number of industries including petro-chemical refineries, construction companies, fabrication shops and ship yards.
“Laura Bell and our lead instructor, Gene Garcia are very knowledgeable about this craft,” said welding student Brandon Ritter. “The hands-on training has been very beneficial in preparing us to go out and look for welding jobs.”
The next welding job training course in Shielded Metal Arc Welding begins August 30 and will meet Monday –Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for 14 weeks.
The welding program will also offer Stick Welding and TIG Welding in the evenings this fall. Both of these 72-hour classes meet Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. starting September 14.
