Drainage Construction Closes Westbound Traffic Lane on Island’s Broadway Boulevard
Two Traffic Lanes Will Remain Open to Motorists; Construction to Occur at Night
(Galveston, TX) – Construction to repair an aging drainage culvert will temporarily close a westbound traffic lane on Broadway Blvd. Starting tomorrow crews will begin replacing a 74-foot long section of the storm drain system over the next seven to 10 days. Alternating westbound traffic lanes on Broadway Blvd, 29th Street to 31st Street, will be closed to motorists while repair work is completed. Two traffic lanes will remain open to vehicles for the majority of the project. To minimize the inconvenience to motorists most construction activities will occur at night.
Last week the structure partially collapsed resulting in a small cave-in at the intersection of 30th Street and Broadway. Further investigation revealed a series of box culverts would need to be replaced. The Galveston City Council appropriated $38,885 for repair work during an emergency City Council meeting earlier today. The City of Galveston is working in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation on this project.
