San Jacinto College celebrates construction of modern science building at Central campus

PASADENA, Texas — By 2013, San Jacinto College (SJC) students will enjoy science instruction in a new three story building complete with the latest in laboratory equipment and lecture facilities at the Central campus.

San Jacinto College recently broke ground to begin construction on the 108,000-square-foot building, funded by a 2008 bond referendum that provided the College with infrastructure improvements, renovations, new classroom buildings, and facilities. The Central campus’ comprehensive science classroom and lab building will boast a large number of laboratories, including 12 for biological sciences, four for chemistry, two for physics, and three for geology. Ten support spaces will be allotted for the labs, and there will be seven tiered lecture halls and nine general classrooms.

The new building replaces older facilities that are more than four decades old. Such development is a long-term dream that is finally coming into fruition for science department chair, Dr. Ann Cartwright.

"I have minutes from meetings dating back to 2002 about a new science building," said Cartwright. "In May 2008, the community supported us, and the bond passed for the construction of the new building. The plans and dreams are now becoming a reality. We have traveled around the state to see the best science labs, so that we could learn from them and have state-of-the-art facilities to offer our students. It is exciting to know we will soon have facilities which will match the excellence of our science faculty."

In addition to classrooms and labs, the building will contain 30 faculty offices, an administrative suite, a computer instruction lab, and a tutoring resource lab. It is designed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards to provide students with a higher energy efficient environment equipped with the most up-to-date systems. Expansive public space has been designated to serve as presentation and gathering areas with specific clear stories to bring natural light in to the entire building.

“The students in this region will benefit from the forward thinking and overwhelming support of the communities that San Jacinto College is privileged to serve,” said Dr. H. Neil Matkin, SJC Central campus president. “We are so fortunate to be in a position to provide state of the art facilities in a time of great need.”

Contractors for the new science building include ACR Engineering, Inc.; Bay Architects; Brooks & Sparks, Inc.; Rizzo & Associates, LLC; and SpawGlass. San Jacinto College Central is located at 8060 Spencer Highway in Pasadena.
