Traffic Stop Leads to Recovery of 5.5 Pounds of Marijuana

Galveston County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris McCarvell was patrolling the High Island area on Tuesday when he observed a green Mitsubishi Montero travelling south on SH-124. The vehicle left the roadway and travelled on the shoulder thus leading the deputy to initiate a traffic stop in the 1400 block of State Highway 87.

As the deputy approached the driver’s door he detected an odor of smoked marijuana coming from the interior. The driver, Derek Richardson 42 and owner and passenger, Brian Holt 50, both of Crystal Beach were detained. An inventory of the car revealed 5.5 pounds of marijuana in the rear floorboard and burned marijuana cigarettes in the ashtray.

Richardson was charged with Possession of Marijuana with a $50,000 bond and Holt was charged with Possession Marijuana with a $40,000 bond. They were taken to the Galveston County Jail.
