COM Cosmetology Student Enjoys Success
College of the Mainland cosmetology student, Tammy Sybert of Texas City, recently placed second in a cut and color contest through the CHI Environmental School Program and Houston-based Farouk Systems, Inc. The contest challenged students to cut and color a model’s hair. She was awarded a CHI flat iron and blow dryer valued at more than $200. “The students have become more motivated to enter competitions and try different hairstyles after seeing a fellow student do so well in a competition,” said Ellen Chicon, cosmetology instructor.
For the cut and color competition, Sybert asked fellow student, Dawne Bolen, to be her model. Sybert took before pictures of Bolen and then cut, colored and styled her hair, and did her makeup.. “I was happy to be Tammy’s model and she did a great job on my hair,” said Bolen.
Sybert will complete the Cosmetology program in December. “In a year you can earn a degree and take it in any direction you want, from owner to manicurists. I think that this is an awesome program,” said Sybert about the COM Cosmetology program. After she gets her certification, Sybert plans to work at a local salon and hopes to become a stylist in the fashion industry.
