DPS Director Announces New Deputy Director

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven C. McCraw has announced the selection of David G. Baker as the new Deputy Director of Law Enforcement Operations effective September 1, 2011.  In his role as Deputy Director for DPS, Baker will oversee law enforcement divisions and coordination of multi-division operations and report directly to Director McCraw.  The selection requires the advice and consent of the Public Safety Commission.

“I am honored by the trust placed in me by Director McCraw and the Public Safety Commission, and I look forward to working with the entire DPS leadership team to continue the outstanding work the Department does on a daily basis,” said Deputy Director Baker.

Baker has been with DPS for over 33 years and most recently served as Assistant Director/Chief of the Texas Highway Patrol since 2009.   Baker began his career in 1978 as a Trooper in Lubbock and his hometown of Perryton; he promoted to Sergeant in 1988 with stops in McAllen and Lubbock; Lieutenant in Lubbock in 1993; Captain in 1996 in Midland; and Major in 2002 stationed at DPS Headquarters in Austin.
