LMISD Foundation names inductees for 2011 Legacy Hall

The La Marque ISD Education Foundation has selected five inductees for its 2011 Legacy Hall. The inductees will be recognized at the Legacy of Champions Distinguished Alumni Celebration that is designed to recognize La Marque ISD graduates and employees who have excelled in their field of expertise, and made significant contributions to their respective communities.

The 2011 inductees include:

• The Honorable Judge Susan Criss, La Marque High School, Class of 1979

• Sarah Giles, Lincoln and La Marque High School, Teacher and Administrator

• The Reverend William Randall, La Marque High School, Class of 1975

• Jimmie Saldana, Lincoln High School, Class of 1963

• Lieutenant Colonel Select Michael Zimmerman, La Marque High School, Class of 1992

“La Marque ISD is built around the legacy of champions – in the classroom, on the field and in the community,” said Denise McLean, the foundation’s executive director. “The five inductees chosen this year are perfect examples of this legacy. They are champions in their professions and in their communities.”

The Honorable Judge Criss received her Doctorate of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law in Houston. She has more than 25 years of service from attorney to now judge. Throughout her career she has held various positions as a law clerk, Head of the Misdemeanor Division, Special Prosecutor for Child and Elder Abuse, and Assistant Criminal District Attorney. She currently presides as the 212th District Court Judge in Galveston. In this position she has created various avenues to inform residents about the court system and how it works.

When you speak to students that have attended the district during her tenure, Sarah Giles is a name that is remembered fondly. Giles has more than 30 years as an educator for La Marque Independent School District. She served as teacher, math chairperson and assistant principal throughout her years with the district. She is known for honesty, dedication and standards of excellence. Sarah Giles is a master teacher of math. She is the kind of instructor that challenges all students to advance the knowledge and understanding of all math concepts. Giles continues to tutor students in La Marque Independent School District to this day.

Reverend William Randall is a 1975 graduate of La Marque High School, a 1979 graduate of Lamar University, a 1986 graduate of Conroe Baptist Institute and has received a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2009. Randall taught math at the district’s middle and high school for 19 years. Reverend Randall works full-time as a minister at his church, Greater St. Matthews. The Church has over 45 ministries and partners with the school district to provide beneficial educational opportunities.

The LM hat is synonymous with the man. Jimmie Saldana, Jr. is a 1963 graduate of Lincoln High School. Upon completion of high school he served his country for five years as a member of the US Air force. After his service ended, he returned to his hometown and worked as employee for Union Carbide/Dow Chemical as an Operations Administrator/Gatekeeper Activity Coordinator. Saldana is a passionate volunteer for La Marque Independent School District. He serves as a dedicated Volunteer in Public Schools (VIPS), a member of 2010 Strategic Planning, Health Advisory Committee, Project Graduation and various other committees for the district.

Lieutenant Colonel Select Michael Zimmerman is a career military man enlisted in the US Air Forces. During his stellar military career Michael has served as the Director of Inspections and Exercises, 55th Wing, Offutt Air force Base, a Project Manager at Headquarter US Air Forces in Europe, Mobility Flight Commander for the 38th Reconnaissance Squadron and more. He is also a fully qualified instructor navigator on the RC-135 “Rivet Joint.” He has flown in more than 37 combat mission totaling more than 400 plus hours.

The Legacy of Champions Distinguished Alumni Celebration will be Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the South Shore Harbour Resort & Conference Center in League City.
