Galveston City Council on Thursday voted 5-1, with Elizabeth Beeton opposed, to approve giving an additional $354,000 in convention center surplus funds to the Park Board for a period of one year.
Mayor Pro Tem Linda Colbert was not present at the time of the vote.
The city council voted unanimously to approve Fire Chief Jeff Smith’s recommendation that the department purchase a Traditional Squad Response vehicle in lieu of a Heavy Duty Rescue Truck for FY2012. Smith also reported to the city council on the assistance being provided by Galveston firefighters and other firefighters from throughout Galveston County to the wildfire response in Texas. The city council voted unanimously to approve the City Auditor's audit plan, with the inclusion of the Port of Galveston and the Park Board of Trustees parking lots in the plan.
The city council voted 6-0, with Chris Gonzales not present at the time of the vote, to nominate Victor Pierson for re-election to the Galveston Central Appraisal District Board of Directors.
The city council voted unanimously, with Gonzales not present at the time of the vote, to approve an agreement with the Park Board of Trustees for the distribution of proceeds from the Hotel Occupancy Tax fund for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
The city council voted 5-1, with Beeton opposed, and Gonzales not present during the vote, to adopt a resolution requesting that the Texas Department of Transportation implement the recommendations of its FM 3005 Drainage Study Report and urging TxDOT to elevate FM 3005 to permit a “more systematic and orderly evacuation”.
The city council voted 6-0, with Colbert not present at the time of the vote, to award a $3,791,923 bid to Crain Group, LLC for the construction of Fire Station No. 4.
The city council voted 6-0-1, with Colbert abstaining, to approve the minutes of the August 25 meeting.
The city council voted unanimously, after some amendments, to appoint Craig Brown, Gina Spagnola, and Bill Rider to the Industrial Development Corporation.
The motion had been amended to appoint only Brown and Rider to the corporation. However, after research by City Attorney Susie Green confirming that the Chamber of Commerce may appoint a designee, the city council voted unanimously to appoint Spagnola, who is president of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce.
The city council discussed, but took no action regarding an amendment to the city's Rules of Ethics to require lobbyist registration.
