Sept. 29 Phi Kappa Phi lecture to focus on Russian avant garde

The Lamar University Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi will host a lecture by Elena Ivanova, chief educator at the Stark Museum of Art, Thursday, Sept. 29, on the Lamar campus.

Ivanova will speak on “Text, Sound, Image: The Russian Avant-Garde Book” from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Spindletop Room of the University Reception Center, on the eighth floor of the Mary and John Gray Library.

The presentation will be the first in what is planned as an annual series, said Kevin Dodson, chapter president of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.

Ivanova joined the staff of the Stark Museum of Art in Orange in 2009 after having served for eight years as curator of education at Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. She also worked at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor, Mich.; and The Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Her professional interests include such areas as lifelong learning in art museums and methodology of museum education.

At the Stark Museum, Ivanova oversees the museum’s educational mission and develops plans for educational programming related to its collections and exhibitions. Her duties include implementing gallery tours, lectures and classes for audiences of all ages; developing curriculum-based programs for schools and teacher workshops; recruiting, training and supervising docents; and evaluating educational programs.

Ivanova holds a master’s degree in English language and literature from the University of St. Petersburg and a doctorate in education from the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, both in St. Petersburg, and a master’s degree in liberal studies from the University of Oklahoma.

Her lecture is open to the public without charge. Additional information is available from Dodson at (409) 212-9726.
