Jim Guidry Commentaries Hurricane Ike Remembered
In Remembrance
J. D. Roach, Sr.
Malloy & Son Funeral Home

J. D. Roach, Sr.J. D. Roach, Sr., 75, died September 20, 2011 at his home in Galveston with his family by his side.   J.D. was born July 6, 1936 in Galveston, Texas to Thomas Roach and Irma Lambessy Roach. He had nine siblings and numerous childhood friends.  In August 1956 he met and married the love of his life, Karen Garland Roach. He was a very involved Father spending countless hours coaching Little League teams, helping with the O’Connell Booster Club, and serving as a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

J. D. lived his life by three guiding principles:  Faith, family, and unconditional love. He was a man of few words but of many actions. He always kept his family first, and there was never a doubt how much he loved each one of us and how proud he was of every accomplishment and milestone.

He was a Galveston Firefighter for 27 years and retired in 1992.  He looked forward to fishing and spending time in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. He and Karen loved to feed the wildlife and watched many amazing sunsets together at their Hill Country home in Utopia, Texas.

Paw’s grandchildren, Morgan and Dylan, were the light of his life. He attended theater productions and ball games, award ceremonies, and May Fete celebrations.  He often reminded them that their education would set them apart in this world and would some day guarantee their success.

J. D. is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Roach and Irma Lambessy Roach, and eight siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Karen Roach; sister, Geraldine Cram; sons, Jay Roach and wife, Dell, and Ernie Roach and wife, Elise; grandchildren, Morgan Roach and Dylan Roach; step grandson, Brian Adams; brother-in- law, Patrick Garland, and wife, Merl; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, September 23, 2011 at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father E. J. Stein officiating.

Pallbearers are Dylan Roach, Patrick Garland, Curtis Garland, Oscar Cram, William “Cab” Caballero, and Dell Ray Lumpkin.  Honorary pallbearers are John L. Brasher, Charlie Flores, Tommy Alexander, Dickey Pearson, Alton Chandler, and Jack Atwood.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the Hospice Care Team staff and UTMB ACE Unit for the exceptional care they gave J. D. during his illness and to his dear friends “Cab” and Alton for their lifelong friendship and support.
