Children to be cast in final ‘Annie’ auditions

PASADENA, Texas — The San Jacinto College (SJC) Central theatre and film department will hold final public auditions for “Annie,” a family oriented musical comedy about a plucky orphan’s journey to find her parents.

The auditions will cast children ages 5 to 15 for the children’s chorus of orphans (boys and girls), and will take place on Sept. 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. on both nights. The auditions will be held in Slocomb Auditorium, located at 8060 Spencer Hwy., in Pasadena. Prior theater experience is not necessary, and enrollment at SJC is not required. Prepared materials are not required, and people auditioning should dress to move.

Local artist and SJC theater instructor Brian Hamlin will direct “Annie.” Rehearsals will begin Sept. 26 for the first set of actors cast, and Sept. 27 for the children’s orphan chorus. There will be a total of 10 rehearsals, most on weekdays. The first five rehearsals will start at 6 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.

Show dates are Oct. 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 7:30 p.m. There will be Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 and 16, and special school performances on Oct. 13 at 9 a.m. and 14 at 10 a.m.

In “Annie,” a popular comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world’s best-loved musicals. The lead character Annie (known for her signature expression “Leapin’ Lizards”) is a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who abandoned her on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. In adventure after adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan’s evil machinations, befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and finds a new family and home with billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.
