Thousands of volunteers turned out to pick up tons of trash from Texas beaches in the Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach cleanup.
Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson participated in the cleanup on Galveston Island at San Luis Pass.
"Good day, flat surf and a lot of volunteers," Patterson said, while thanking Shell Oil for a $50,000 contribution "to help us market this with social media to get more interest and more turnout."
Patterson did call attention to a sad note, the passing of Joe Faggard, a longtime resident of the Bolivar Peninsula, who was a civic leader and supporter of beach related activities throughout the years.
“A guy that has been and will still be an icon,”Patterson said.
“You know, Senator Bernsen passed a bill, the Coastal Erosion Protection Response Act.
We named it after him, the Joe Faggard bill.
So we are going to miss this gentleman on the Texas Coast.”
Patterson posed for photos on the beach with many of the Shell volunteers who gave a shout out to support the effort.
Juan Peña contributed to the photos in this article.
